Ram upgrade question

I have two gigs of ram now ddr2 800 & I was thinking of getting four gigs.

WinXP Home
Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz

Now the task manager in Winblows only shows me using 1.5 to 1.8 max even playing COD4. So my question is if I get more RAM will Windows use it?
 
Are you using a 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) version of Windows XP. If it's a 32-bit version, you system will allow for a maximum of 4GB of addressable memory, which includes video memory as well. Therefore, if you do decide to upgrade from 2GB to 4GB (which should yield a noticeable improvement in performance), I would suggest upgrading to a 64-bit operating system. If you are already using a 64-bit OS, then Windows will use the additional RAM that you install.
 
I have 32bit OS.

So you are saying that I will notice an improvement? I will not upgrade to 64bit until my next build which will be Win7
 
Running 32bit you're OS will only register/address 4Gb of memory in total including video memory.

Your system will at most recognize 4GB of RAM. However, you should still notice an improvement when going from 2 to 4GB. In the end, it depends on what you're using the system for (i.e. internet, word processing, encoding, gaming, etc).
 
Its a cheap upgrade so why not do it. Your machine will have about 3.5gb's of usable ram (can depend on the board) You might only see 3.25gb's. But as i said. Cheap upgrade, so work away :)
