Hi there guys. My system specs are listed below in my sig. I'm looking for a RAM upgrade, to 2Go.

I got no O/C right now, but plan on cranking it up eventually. What are your suggestions on 2Go of RAM for that kind of system? Also, should I go for 1Go modules, or 512Mo mudules?

I was looking at some OCZ ram, even though I am pleased with my Corsair right now. I just don't know : /

Thanks in advance for your inputs,

Regards,

what do you do with your rig that has made you decide that a capacity upgrade will be justified? :D

And what are Go and Mo besides a movie with Katie Holmes and one of the Three Stooges?

lol sorry about Go's and Mo's, french for Gb's and Mb's...I think you could've firured that out easily though

This is a pure gaming rig as you might have guessed...Playing Lock On, GR:AW, GTR, F.E.A.R. and a few other titles as well...

Cheers,

Sorry. :) The only French that I know is French fries and French Toast.

What retailers are available to you? OCZ's Platinum 2x1GB set would be the way I'd go, if you can get it. Or Team Xtream, particularly the Micron based set, if you can get those. Nothing less than DDR500 (PC4000) if you plan on pushing it.

What motherboard do you have, BTW? If you have an Asus board... Things can get hairy with memory choices.

I got an Asus A8N-SLI Premium board, as indicated in the link to my specs in my signature. I can get OCZ no problem.

So you would recommend OCZ Platinum, 2 x 1Gb, DDR500? Something like this?

What do you think about this I am no RAM geek at all so I was wondering about the timings...3-3-3-8...isn't that a bit high? How would it be better then DDR400 RAM?

Thanks,

These look fine too (cf)Eclipse. What's the deal about the Micron? How to you know a certain set of modules are micron based? Can you elaborate on that?

Sorry to ask again, but what about the timings? And how would DDR500 be better then DDR400? Would there be a big performance difference?

I said I wasn't a RAM geek... I'd sure love to become one though... :p I don't seem to understand RAM as well as otehr parts of a pc :(

Best regards,

i just kinda know.
plus, it doesn't help that there's three 1gb performance sticks on the market with micron chips:
crucial ballistix
teamgroup xtreem cronus micron (duh :p)
and those ocz platinum el xtc's

first one has micron 5b D, latter two have 5b F, which doesn't clock quite as well it seems.

for timings vs mhz.. neither has a really big effect with the K8. i generally like being able to hit high mhz more than do tight timings because when overclocking, the cpu is what matters most, and it makes it simpler if your ram has greater flexibility :D

Roger that.

I was just reading "The Memory FAQ". Very nice guide indeed. Lots of usefull information in there but it can get a bit confusing for a non geek

So even though I'm not overclocking right now the wise choice would still be DDR500, if I'm planning on overclocking sooner or later? Am I getting it? I must say I selected almost every single part of this rig knowing I was gonna O/C it sooner or later...Right now it is quite fast as you would've guessed but hey, we can never get enough speed, right? :D

Thanks for the infos. Should you think of something else, or have other usefull comments, or suggestions, please do not hesitate! I like to be well informed.

Cheers,

yeah, it might be wise to pick up ddr500.. just run it at ddr400 for now, and when the time comes, step it up :D

and sorry for the guide being a bit complex. point out what did you in and i'll look into fixing it ;)
