ram ratios when overclocking

pretty simple and straightforward question: how do ratios work?

suppose i run my ram at 5:4 and my fsb is at 250.
the cpu is thus running at a speed of 1000mhz and the memory is at 1.25x250= 312.5 (x2 = 625)

but i still dont really get this.

my memory is rated pc3500 (217fsb), suppose i run the voltage at 2.8 (board max) and run really relaxed timings if need be, can i even reach this speed?

these ratios boggle me. on the other hand, suppose im running a 1:1 ratio, that would make it much simpler since the fsb and cpu are running synch at a minimum of 217mhz (868 for cpu and 434 for ram)

so if someone can please explain to me exactly how these ratios work id appreciate it. ive heard alot of people are hitting 250mhz on the ram running 5:4 ratios with pc3500 ram, but that seems abit over the top for me, either that or im not comprehending something correctly.

my thanks in advance.

edit: specs in sig

Im not real certain on a lot of the ram options when it comes to oc'ing. I do know this, however. When using the ratio, you divide the fsb by the first number and times the second. Thats the speed you memory is running at. Take your example. FSB of 250 with ratio @ 5:4. 250/5 is 50 times 4 is 200. So your ram is running at 200mhz. Your processor speed is the multiplier times the fsb. So if your mulitplier was 11 and fsb is 250. Your processor speed would be 2750 mhz.Hope that helped some.

aaaaaaaah perfect
now i comprehend how it works
i had been told that its a 5 divided by 4 times the fsb

now it makes sense

thanks alot!
