Ram Purchase Advice

I'm looking to purchase a second gig of ram for my rig, but i have a concern. I recently watercooled my cpu and am over clocking my p4 2.8 to 3.15. The ram is curently one gig of pc3200 geil (2 x 512) running at 460mhz.

What I am asking is:
What is the most advisable...(1)Purchasing another gig of pc3200 and ocing that in a similar manner to my existing setup, or (2)purchasing ram with a higher clock speed(maybe pc4000).

My concern with number (2) is compatibility with the two different speeds of ram. Will this cause instability.

You should just sell your current ram, buy better stuff to go with the OC, no point in stressing pc3200 when you can sell it and get pc4000.......and why do people want 2 gigs? some cases have shown to actualy slow down computers, cause more heat.....think about it, your cpu is going to each bank to use memeory and thats a lot of stress going to all 4 banks all the time :p if im wrong just flame me :)

That is certainly an option. However, can anyone verify this claim to reduced performance by doubling ram? Furthurmore, would a compatibility issue arise if i did use both types?
 
Depends if your mobo dosent mind, in general it wont matter, i had pc2100 and pc3700 and it ran just fine in my comp overclocked well too.......and im sure if you google youll find it, and most people will tell you unless your gonna make movies, or edit, create pictures 24/7 with that computer, stick with a gig. I dont think youd see much preformence gain in using 2 gigs with games, or app's, just video editing/graphic rendering

all of your memory will run at the speed of the slowest memory..

what timings is your geil doing 240mhz at? i would just aim for ram that will do 240 at the same timings and voltage..

i am not sure if 4 banks of memory is bad with a p4.. i know it can make an a64 take a performance hit..

you can sell it and get 2 1gig sticks also... i wouldn't sell it and get 4x 512 though..
 
Thanks guys for you help. The ram timings on the existing ram are very loose(i forget the exact timings). In order to keep the system running i needed to loosen them up quite a bit. From what you are saying, One last question: 2gigs of ram doesn't boost gaming performance? How come?
 
I dont know exactly why, im sure Eclipse will answer that for you :p basicly windowsXP only registers 512 for its use (unless its changed) programs will grab more, there are some memeory eating games out now, but they wont take advantage of 2 gigs cause they dont need 2 gigs, so youll see maybe up to 10% gain in games, but remember all games have their limit too, games cant go faster than their rated FPS, 2 gigs is over kill, like i said unless your making movies all day and night dont bother with 2 gigs, if i had the money i wouldnt, id go for new hard drive raptor or something :p just my 00.02$
