Ram mod question

HI all. I have 2x512 sticks of crucial ballistix tracer. I really like the blue back lighting and how it illuminates the dimm slots. I also really like the dark red tracers, but I dont really care for the green tracer LEDs. So my question is would it be possible to puncture the green leds' to break and therefor prevent them from flashing, or are they all tied together
(meaning like the christmas tree light effect, if one goes out they all go out). I've studied the pattern and know which ones are the red and green idividual LEDs. Im quite sure by doing this it wouldn't hurt the Ram itself. I know the flashing of the LEDs are determined in real time by system processing, but again I think by doing this it wouldn't "hurt" anything...NO? Has anyone here ever tried anything like this, or if it can even be done at all? Im sure it can be done, but I'd just like to hear some of yous guys opinions before I go and break somethin'

thanks. :)

I'm sure this isn't a good idea... I mean, yeah... they're probably not in series, as they'd all light up if they were, but honestly... That's expensive RAM, and you'd definitely ruin your warrantee by doing that. What would I do? Black sharpie marker over the offending spots. Worst comes to worst, you can clean it off with some 91% alcohol and return them clear (if you ever need to re-sell or something).

PS. Welcome to the forums :)

Can you post pics? Or a link?

I can't really answer your question, but this RAM sounds interesting.

I never thought about using a sharpie, that seems like a more rational idea anyhow. The only thing though is the green ones are really bright, it might have a hard time covering it well enough. I'll try that, because your right it is nice ram and I'd hate to do that to it anyway. The electrical tape would be even more logical maybe, but I'd be cutting some very tiny peices, and it'd probably get tiresome. thanks for the advice.

Oh whoops I originally posted this in the gallery section, thanks for moving. Every time I visit [H]forums I usually go straight the gallery section, so I instinctively made my topic there. Sorry about that.

The sharpie idea didnt work to well, the ugly green light still shined through, though slightly dimmed. That wasn't enough for me so I decided to remove just one green light on 1 dimm. I got my smallest pair of hemos and basically ripped it off. It came off very cleanly and easily. Put the dimm back in and booted up my comp. Every light lit up except the one I removed...duh. :p. Sweet. Took both sticks out and removed all the green LEDs. All came off very cleanly and easily. Plopped em back in and nothin' but red. The whole procedure took maybe 5 minutes if that. And damn those lights are tiny, frikken nanosmall. Smaller than half the size of an uncooked grain of rice.
I realise I voided my warranty, but I'm not worried about it. I've had this ram since June of last year. Warrant period is probably up anyway. hehe.
I'm Not really an overclocker anyway. This is pc4000 Ram, which I run at pc3200 speeds with 2-2-2-5 latency timings.Manufacturer recommends the timings need to be 2-3-3-8 at pc3200 speeds and 2.5-4-4-10 at ddr500, but I have no problems running the way I do.
Anyway I'm pretty stoked and glad that I just went ahead and did it. Looks much nicer. Sometimes you never know what will happen unless you try and find out. Worst case scenario, none of the LEDs woulda lit up or something...oh well.

And you can always re-solder them back on :). Good job dude, This is good to know, incase anyone else wants to deface 350$ CAD Ram :p. Jks dude, but damn you're lucky.

No man I didnt pay $350 for this ram. My Total payment was $172 shipped. You must have it confused with something else. Newegg doesn't seem to carry em anymore, but This is basically the ram that I have. Except mine has the tracers (obviously), black heat spreaders, and its says Ballistix Tracer on the spreaders. Also there is no chance of ever soldering the LEds back on.My new camera should be arriving via ups either today or tomorrow, I could take some pictures.

i used blue electrical tape over my white leds on my thermaltake fan and it turned out awsome they look just like the blue leds on it....

I removed all of the green LEDs (nine of them) from my DLink DI-784 router last weekend. Now I can sleep without my room being lit up at night.

Too late Darkala :p
Thats cool po0n and Frank. Im not really a big fan of green lights or LEDs in general. I like green colors, but not blinding green Leds that can cause you too lose sleep or over saturate a case.

Does anyone know a site where I can upload some .mov file that are ca.10-20mb?
Also I'd prefer if it will let you save the file to disk and keep the quality of the original.
thanks.

broadcast it on youtube.com? Upload on suploads.com? that's all I can think of right now.

ok thanks.
Supload seems to be the way to go, as it actually lets you downlaod the file.
I will post a couple of vids in a little while. I have to let my battery charge on my camera.

you could have gotten red leds the same size and soldered them in plase if you took the time to desolder the green leds

Actually no, I think that would have been impossible. Im not sure if these lights even are LEDs. I'm not sure what they are, but I know theyre tiny as hell.

Those three things in the red circle are, believe it or not, are the lights that I removed.
If you look closely at the one thats flipped upright, you can see a small green dot on it. Which I assume is where its got its greeness from:p They weren't even soldered on, they were like glued on or something. idk its wierd.

*The red dots indicate where the green lights have been removed.

Any way, here are a couple or littte vids I made of this modded RAM in action.
idle
load
Unfortunately, I have no pics or vids of the RAM prior to this mod. But like I've said, I like it much better this way, and am glad that I just went ahead and done it.

Those appear to be surface mount LEDs. They're really small and tough to solder on :p Trust me. The green dot generally signifies polarity. Green for positive if I remember right...

PS. In the "Load" movie... I distinctly heard you running out of "double damage" in ut2k4.

Actually I wasnt playing. I was just speccin some guy to bring my system under load. But what do you mean by that anyhow?
Its kind of hard to record a vid and play a game at the same time
