I'll start here and if I need to I'll go to another sub forum...

I got another 6gb of ram for 12 total. However the system says only 8gb is usable.

This isn't a 1156 board, so the compression issue shouln't exist, I did lose up the screws holding the H50 on.

I'm at a loss.
 
Kendrak, is this in the BIOS or in the OS? What does CPU-Z say in the SPD section as to RAM module size per slot?
 
It's in the bios, when I look at memory in the bios it only sees 8gb

System seems to be quite happy in duel channel mode with 8gb

/sigh

This boxen will be the death of me.
 
Assuming all slots are functioning, the only thing I can come up with are either incompatible modules (if they're not the same) or bad modules.

Another extremely unlikely situation is specific combinations that reduce total amount of memory because it is being reserves/allocated by the BIOS for other uses. For example, two of my workstation boards have a horrible 'feature' in which up to 1GB of memory is allocated for the PCI-E bus if 4GB is installed. IOW, you will see a max of 2.84GB with 4GB installed because PCI-E and other components have their individual shares of RAM reserved.
 
It depends on your overclocks and memory settings...

Go stock clocks and lower your timings and memory speed and start from there.
 
They are all the same RAM modules, and they all work.

I've poked around, it seems that in order to get 12gb to work you have to juice them if they don't work.

I'm not sure how I feel about that.

8 gig is cool, however, WTF am I going to do with this 4gb of DDR3, and sad panda for being stuck in duel channel mode (if that even makes a diff)
 
I wouldn't see an issue with adding a bit of extra voltage in order to get them all addressed. With that much memory you probably have some substantial vdroop anyway. Kick it up a notch and see what it says the actual voltage is.
 
I'd probably try to get it to work. If you will be running -bigadv, that is reason enough and the additional memory will likely be useful. I would allocate at least 6 GB for the -bigadv client alone, but probably would give it closer to 8GB. The remaining RAM would be for everything else and there isn't much left with a total of 12GB.

-bigadv only needs 5gb, with 8 in the system that is 3gb for everything else. Should be plenty.

I had 6x2gb Gskill modules in it, and it ran fine.
Did you try clearing the CMOS?
 
I've got 12 GB with an indicated 5200 MB for folding with the EVGA folding VM. For today's experiment I am trying -smp 8 while running both of my 275s. So far, so good but I'll see for sure in the morning.
 
I'm running 5200 indicated on the VM for the -bigadv with 8 gig in the box along with 3 GPU clients.
 
What would this be called on gigabyte mobos?

On another forum someone contacted gigabyte about a memory remapping feature, this is what they said:
