RAM for Conroe

I will be buying some RAM in the future (2x512), and wanted to know what speed DDR to buy for Conroe. I would like for this to be my last memory purchase for a long time (unless I buy another gig) so I'd like to be somewhat future proof.
 
DDR2-533 is minimum, anything more than DDR2-800 is icing on the cake. Right now the price/performance is probably best on DDR2-667, but all prices will drop in the next few months once DDR factories are converted.
 
Why not 2GB is you plan on making it last long?

Are you overclocking?

Budget?

I'm just going to throw in 2×1GB of DDR2-800 for now...maybe drop the frequency..

Budget mostly. I will be overclocking, but not till I get a better motherboard.
 
So DDR 800 will keep me going for a long time? Does that mean that Conroe systems run a memory divider then? What is the FSB for a Conroe system right now? In the future?

1066 FSB. Base speed used for the Multiplier is 266.7. Take a look at the GSkill DDR2 800/PC-64000? for $189, about $194 shipped.
 
Cool. That means I will be able to use DDR2 800 till Intel decides to bump up the FSB to 1600/400. Man...A real FSB of 400. That would be INSANE.

Yup or a sweet a$$ed overclock to 400MHz FSB. That would be equal to 1600MHz effective.

So stock 1:1 is DDR-533 and even the value 800 sets should allow for a 50% OC that right? Or is Intel usually run a ration towards higher memory MHz? Then what are the divider hits like?
 
Yes. 1:1 is actually DDR2-533 yes. Just divide the FSB by 4 and the DDR2 by 2. So with 1333 FSB chips (when Intel bumps it up to this) you would need DDR2-667 to run at 1:1.

There are ratios to run faster then 1:1, that is where the higher speed DDR2 comes into play. I don't plan on doing that, so I haven't even looked at it, but I think it does net some sort of gains.

The system would run just as fast with $189 GSkill CAS4-4-4-12. RAM is NOT making alot of difference with C2D at all. That's why Intel used CAS5 5-5-15.

Just think of it as needing 2 Channels of RAM to match 1 channel Processor's FSB and System devices.

On modern motherboards you want more Memory Bandwidth than Processor Bandwidth so you have it for other bandwidth hungrey devices like PCI-E and I/O. This didn't matter much in the old days when I/O was only 133MB or AGP was 533MB or something like that. Now PCI-E can eat more than 2 to 4 GB in each direction at the same time.

So DDR2 800 = 6.4GB of bandwidth. In dual Cannel Mode that's 12.8GB and with the Processor using 8.4GB of that system's bandwidth, that leaves 4GB for PCI-E and I/O.
Did you know*** Intel DMI link or Direct Memory Interface link is Serial and Point to Point just like Hypertransport? Bandwidth equals 2GB instead of 256MB like ICH5. It connect directly to the memory hub controller and NOT the FSB. Running in Async (NOT 1:1) doesn't casue the hit to performance like i865/i875 and to lesser degree i925 did.

yea a lot of gskill ram doesn't work with some motherboards, corsair works with everything
 
The patriot 2x1gb DDR 667 on newegg is around 150.00, and suppose to overclock close to or above 1000mhz

Yes it is used for Intel ONLY. The nasty little thing that's not talked about much? Unlike the Integrated Controller, Intel's slightly slower North Bridge version is more flexible. This RAM also doesn't work on nVidia Chipsets for Intel.

I'm not planning on using every motherboard. This RAM was bought with a limited range of Boards in mind. Just like buying RAMBUS back in the day. Just like 9 months ago, I didn't buy a GB of DDR1 PC-4000 for Intel, it was for a 939 and 3500+ combo.
