RAM Drive Software

for opensource for windows i've used imdisk.

Used it just to mess around with stuff.

Are you willing to pay for ram drive software?
 
i've fiddled with a few and the best (free) one i've found was 'SoftPerfect RAM Disk'

full featured software (essentially copying & pasting bullet points off website), no limitation on number drives (except the limit with alphabet) or cap on RAM available to disk. created RAM drive can be either set as volatile or non-volatile, image tools etc.

a guy over at 'raymond's computers, made easy' did a roundup of 12 RAM drive programs if your interested. the 'SoftPerfect RAM Disk' did pretty well in testing there...

Softperfect makes some pretty nice software. I didnt know they had this product.
 
i've used the ASRock ram utility. yes you need an ASRock board, but it works ok, used to have blue screens when i had the page file on the ramdisk, but once i moved it to a mech drive, my pc worked fine.

(page file on a ramdisk... ramception?)

highly recommend it. As i mentioned, tried a few others and they were a bit 'meh' due to features/performance/price.
Can't beat free.

I was surprised at the performance (CDM bench test) deltas between all the ram drive suites.
 
I've used Dataram free version a few times. It's very easy to use and I love the ability to load and unload disk images during boot/shutdown. It used to be $10, when did the price go up?
 
Bump for Softperfect Ramdisk.

I've been using it to load GW2 into memory and run from there to eliminate stuttering when loading new maps, and it works a treat. Just bought 16gb more (thank you newegg 3 hour sale) for 51 dollars to make 32gb total :) Now I should be able to load any game and have plenty of ram to spare :)
 
I've used Dataram before, but it was almost a decade ago and the limits on the freeware were alot lower. Right now I'm using ATI's Radeon Ram Disk for a 3 GB ramdrive and it works perfectly with all the normal features. When I upgrade my computer again I'll spring for the paid version so I can run a bigger (40GB+) ramdrive.
 
Softperfect Ramdisk, any way to have it automatically save an image ever 15 minutes so if the power goes out that data isn't completely lost?
 
Yes you can. Basically you make a user image, assign it to save to a HDD somewhere, and then there are advanced options to save to disk periodically.

I do like Softperfect Ramdisk, however the current version seems to have a problem with boot images. Don't make one of those, make a user image. Ramdisk still starts up with windows and mounts the image into ram without having to make it a 'boot' image.

I switched my windows temp files and browser cache and it's been great improvement for my craptacular dev box.
 
I've used Dataram RAMdisk for quite a long time. The free version has a 4GB limit but the paid version is only $19. It's not something I use daily but have no complaints about it.

Well that was short lived. Apparently a VM with 24GB of RAM cannot make a RAM disk greater than 3.9 GB? I have the full version and it says I can make a 23GB disk, but it wont start the driver on Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Any ideas?

For people using SoftPerfect (or other RamDisk software) I am curious if you have tested or know about when they start. E.g. some Ram disks won't start until the user logs on.

I had to do a lot of fiddling/trial-and-error with ImDisk to find the proper way to get it started without requiring somebody to log on to the server.

The actual goal for the RAM DISK (in my case) is to avoid write 30-50GB of data to thrown-away data to SSD every single day and RAM is still significantly faster than SSD which is significantly faster than normal hard drive.

And to have it working/running as soon as possible (without requiring user intervention by logging on)
