ram disk uses?

been thinking about buying some more ram and dedicating some to a ramdisk...

Ive read thats its awesome for Firefox... but what else? I already disabled my page file...
 
gaming, scratch/temp file locations for software like adobe suite or cad software
 
More RAM directly translates in more disk cache.

So that means if you start a game like WoW and play it for some time. Then close it do something else. Now you want to play WoW again and it loads near-instantly and also in-game the loading scenes are very short. This is all the effect of RAM filecache. The more RAM you have, the more data from your disk that can be cached. Very effective if you do not have an SSD.

You don't have to anything to use the additional RAM; just read files; it will be stored in RAM and not go away until an application needs more memory. With 32-bit apps limited to 2GiB of memory this will likely not happen with 4GB+ systems. Having 16GB RAM will allow a large amount of applications and other stuff to be cached, but of course comes at a price. At one stage, having an SSD is just alot better.
 
Remember that the RAM drives can only hold up to 4GB, so don't dump WoW and Adobe programs all onto it at once b/c it will quickly fill up.
