RAM cooling fan?

I can't find anything useful on google. Just wondering if any of you know how to set up a way to cool ram with air. I'm getting some BH5, and will probably end up taking the voltage up quite high. Thanks.
 
Install a 120mm blow hole in the side of your case blowing directly on the mobo.

That should take care of it. ;)

Yeppers, exactly what I was gonna say.....120mm is almost a must, as it stays fairly quiet (depending on the fan) and covers a larger area of the mobo with its airflow.
 
Some kind of small RAM sinks might help as well.

Personally I don't like heat spreaders as they don't really do anything. But the blow hole and RAM sink combo might help you out.

True, something like this combined with a panel mounted intake fan would probly do a hell of a lot more for you then heatspreaders.....as they're "sharing" the heat with every other memory chip under the 'spreader.....while trapping heat underneath the heatspreader itself and not offering any ventilation.

Man, I might have to give that a go with my OCZ. I mean really.....even withOUT a fan blowing on the memory, those heatsinks would do a heck of a lot more then the heatspreaders the memory came with, more surface area, more free flowing air around the stick itself.....and no shared heat between memory chips.
 
I guess the next question would be how to remove the original heat spreaders. I tried to take mine off of my Corsair XMS, figuring that little retention clip was the only thing holding them in place. That's not the case. Those things are on there pretty good. Any ideas?

It can be quite tricky with some certain DIMMS. As you may have noticed....some review sites actually do resort to killing the memory to take off the heatspreaders and expose teh chips. I'd do some research if I were you to see if you can get an exact yes or no answer on whether or not you should even bother trying to pry 'em off.
 
If you're serious about keeping your RAM cool, you might want to go with a blower-style (squirrel-cage, at least that's what I call them) fan aiming along the length of the sticks. Sunon makes a number of them, I picked one up at Fry's but I'm sure you'd be able to find a selection online, I just dunno where :rolleyes: PMB1297PYB1-AY is the model number on mine.

True, this is louder, but when you need air on a concentrated spot, and with RAM sticks/sinks having as little surface area as they do, an axial fan is not the best choice.

It IS possible to remove the heatspreaders on most RAM sticks, they are stuck on with standard issue thermal tape. The main thing to be careful of is that you use a plastic or taped-up metal tool for leverage, so you don't damage the card's PCB in the process, I have been successful with OCZ and Corsair memories doing this. Of course DON'T try this on the Corsair Pro series as the sinks are thermally bonded to the module (the fact that I want to be able to see the activity LED's on my Pro sticks is another reason I went with a blower fan).
