I sold a stick of PC133 512MB SDRAM to someone which WAS working prior to shipment and I get an AIM msg from him telling me that his RAM melted.. I don't get it?? Any explanation befire I refund his money?

: well i put the ram in, and i turned on my computer and i smelled burning plastic...

: so i quick turn off my computer and sure enough the ram like BURNED, there's a big black spot on the ram and it started melting the slot on my mobo for ram

: smelled like burnt plastic for 2 days in my room...thank god the slot is still ok and the old ram i had in there still works

GujuMafia1: give me specs on ur comp

: so i called up a couple of computer places to see wtf happened and they said most likely its defective ram

Sounds like BS. Defective RAM doesn't work, but it doesn't melt or catch on fire. If anything, the VRM on the mainboard for the RAM is defective.

I seriously doubt that 3.3v is enough to slag RAM. You would need a good 12v or so, and a ton of amperage. I also seriously doubt that this could have happened and left functional RAM slots on the motherboard.

I think he was smelling bovine faeces rather than burning ram...

have him return the RAM to you before refunding his money, I would want to see proof of what he's claiming

I concurr... however, I have seen ram melt before. This happened because the person was using the wrong kind of ram. Back in the old days... you learned quick that if you use the wrong RAM... bad stuffs can happen.

totally, get him to return it first...if he's all like "erm...errr....hmmm..." about it then he's talking outta his ass crack...

If you ask him to retrun the ram to you he might just take a lighter or do something stupid to it. He sounds like he bullshitting though. Just ignore him and keep your moneys.

unless he installed the RAM backwards... i don't really see it suppose to melt or burn... above all... his RAM slots are still working!

That is what is really bugging me about this. The ONLY way I know of to fry RAM like this would be to put it in DDR slots, and then you get that famous no boot situation. So unless he thought that if he left it like that for 2 months running, he's BSing, or something really, really weird happened. If that is the case, though, I want pics. ;)

Putting it in backwards can cause some fun stuff to happen.....

If pics were provided, it would help.

thing is to put it in backwards or to fit it in a DDR slot would have taken some doing...the lugs would either have had to be broken in the slot itself or the RAM module would have been damaged...

was this an ebay sale?

Even getting it about half in will cause it to torch- I've seen the aftermath of such events several times, using both DDR and PC1xx style memory.

Well to clarify this issue then you need to get him to either send the RAM back, or get him to send some pictures of both the RAM, the slot and the rest of the motherboard, along with a model name for the mobo...

As if you needed any more convincing, I'm calling Bullshit on this too. RAM just doesn't spontaneously combust when it's installed properly.

Don't do a thing until he provides pics and/or the memory. Also, do not do anything until he can send you the specs of the motherboard...or the name I mean...so you can look it up and see if it's compatible. If it's not compatible, tell him that, and end all communication with him.

It'sm his error, or lie. Dead RAM wont do anything. But I have accidently put some in backwords and not seated all the way before and it did get VERY hot and burnt the gold contacts.

Hahahah I've seen crazy stuff happen in a computer

CD-Roms catch on fire
Hard Drives internally melt themselves
and even a processor melt straight through a mobo

never have I seen Ram just start to flame up.... and the fact that the slot is still okay, that's completely unbelievable

My prognosis: I think there is a small band of Hamas members living in his case, sabotaging things

remind him that ram slots are not ashtrays... if he smokes

or maybe its bs

get him to give u pics, if he says no, then theres a problem
if he says yes and does something to the ram, then you could probably tell by the pic... and NOT refund him so he takes the hits
if he says yes and its real, then refund him

and post the pics if u get any

dont tell us all these cool things without pics! pics! pics! PICS!

He managed to stick it in backwards, I'll bet. I doubt he's criminal, just amazingly stupid.

This was definitely an error on his part. Link him to this thread so he sees that everyone is on your side.

my 486 motherboard caught fire, shot out a spark from a capacitor and burned a tiny black hole in my carpet

Mikey thinks the customer in this case if full of shite.

My advice is protect the vendor. Unless you make your trade in selling hardware then you should be prepared for a bad stick of memory from time to time and you have the freedom to take pity on the customer. We were all beginners once. ;)

I would have him mail it back to you, hope you remember what it looks like. Wonder if he would send a stick back that he melted.

I asked him to send the RAM back and said he would. I am still waiting..

How long have you been waiting?

I'd say he's trying to screw you over.

Hahaha...Witty remarks often get lost at [H]...

Nice one though...

there is one site posted all those funny stuffs...

shattered cd rom, warped HDD, blown NIC .etc

and the most are? burned RAM... my friend once inserted the PC133 RAM backwards, luckily i noticed that the RAM is not level and reinsert it again. this is where i noticed it was backwards. FYI, the slot's plastic thingy that prevent the ram from being inserted backward was broken off! this was in the era of duron 750

The RAM has come in..

If anybody wants more pics of any specific area, don't hesitate to ask.

I realize its a little late now that you have the ram, but I would have told him that the memory probably has a lifetime warranty and to take it up with the manufacturer.

Memory can melt, but its usually the result of an installation error.

Holy poop.

The one way I can think of that this would happen is if the mainboard didn't like the RAM, got confused, and gave it 12v instead of 3.3v. :p

As an IT professional, the ONLY time I have ever seen anything like this is from user error. The memory was probably put in backwards. The way I would handle the sittuation is this:

If the memory had a lifetime warrenty, would the mfg. replace it? Usually, even with a lifetime warranty, the mfg. wouldn't replace something if it looked like this. So, why should you have to replace/refund it?

The point is, a properly functioning, correctly installed/configured system won't do this to memory.

A properly functioning, correctly configured system shouldn't fry it's own BIOS chips, either, but I've seen it happen.

haha, sadly so have I  **asus** hahaha.... oh well, I would have to say that if it's user error, ro the guy is being a n00b, stop talking to him... let him deal with the manufacturer... besides, I know it's principal that counts here....but it is PC133 ram, that can't be much money....
