Raising Northbridge Voltage Solves Memory Errors?

I was having memory errors when I ran Vista's memory test until I set my Northbridge voltage to "highest". Is this normal?

MOBO: AsRock P45TS
PROC: Q9550 E0 @ 3400 (400*8.5)
RAM: 4gb G.Skill DDR3 @ 666 (3:5)
POWER: Antec 650w
VID: MSI GTX 280 OC
 
While AMD CPU's have the memory controller integrated right onto the CPU itself, [current] Intel systems have the memory controller integrated into the northbridge. Each memory command has to go through the NB, so if it isn't getting enough volts, you will see errors.

I'm not familiar with your motherboard, but there's a chance that setting it to the highest it will go could be too much voltage for the NB to handle. Get it stable at the speed you want, then try to lower the NB voltage one notch and test for stability. I'd keep doing that until you get it the lowest it will go. Does your BIOS tell you how much voltage the NB is getting? Or does it just say stuff like "Lowest" and "Highest"?
 
Hmmmm. I just got an error. Im going to try running the ram 1:1 but I recal having errors before at 1:1.
 
Yeah, my Northbridge voltage just says Auto, Low, Middle, High, Highest. Setting the NB voltage to "Highest" did add some stability but not enough to stabalize it @ 400 FSB 1:1 Ratio. So far I am stable @ 360 FSB 1:2 Ratio with everything else set to "Auto". I thought for sure I would hit a 400 FSB with no problems. I did try a stick of DDR2 with the same problem so I am starting to believe it's the Motherboard thats holding me back. Tom's Hardware was able to get this Motherboard up to like 480 FSB. Maybe I got a bad board? What do you guys think?

OC'ing to higher levels is usually more complicated than changing 1 or 2 settings from Auto and being good to go. For example:

Higher CPU clock speeds usually require more CPU voltage.
Higher FSB levels usually require more FSB Termination (also called VTT) and NB voltages.
Higher RAM usually speeds require more NB and RAM voltages.

Extremely high OC levels require a dozen or more different BIOS settings to be fine tuned to perfection in order to maintain stability.

To get you started, try changing these settings:

FSB: 400
CPU Multiplier: 8.5
CPU Voltage: 1.300v
NB: 1.30v
FSB Term or VTT: 1.26v
RAM Voltage: Highest setting as listed by manufacturer (if box says 2.0 - 2.1v, change to 2.1v).
RAM Timings: Change from Auto to manufacturer's listed timings.

Keep your RAM underclocked in order to eliminate that as a cause of instability. Once you get your system stable @ 3.4Ghz, raise your RAM speed back to stock and then start testing stability and OC it if you want.
 
Hey, thanks for the advice. I have been keeping my ram underclocked, and have tried CPU voltages as high as 1.4 and FSB voltages as high as they will go. I have also tried RAM voltages. The only thing that seems to be unstable @ 400 FSB is the RAM. It starts to throw memtest errors even when it's underclocked. When I raised the FSB voltage to "Highest" it did alot better on memtest, but still threw some errors. I tried this again with some underclocked DDR2 with the same results. That is why I am thinking the FSB is causing the errors. Ill try the VTT voltage.

I've had my system for a year now and just recently discovered what VTT is used for...it helps!!! I think I'm at 1.23vtt and 1.29mch with a 1.37vcore which I plan to lower some more in hopes that the vtt and mch bumps are what my system really needs to be stable.

HAve the same MB and CPU as you. Just can't get it stable at 400Mhz FSB. If you don't mid helping me out, what were you NB, VTT, PLL and GTLRef settings?
