I attended a LAN party this past weekend and brought my Norco 4220 to share files.
Hardware:
8x Samsung 2TB 5400 green drives
1x OCZ Vertex 2 60GB (L2Arc)
LSI 9211x8 HBA
MB: Asus M3A79T-Deluxe
CPU: Phenom II 940 3.0gHz quad
RAM: Corsair Dominator 8GB DDR2 1066
NIC: PCI Intel gigabit
Software:
OS: Solaris Express 11
Wine 1.31 (self compiled)
DC++ .782
Config:
RAIDZ2 w/ 60 GB SSD L2 ARC
Thoughts:
Wine was throwing errors compiling on Solaris, so I didnt get it working until the night before the LAN party. That meant that I didnt hash any of my files in time for the LAN party. DC++ program hashes all files multiple times before they are shared so that it can offer them in segments for downloading.
Hashing my files I was getting around 80 MB/sec performance.
So I arrive at the LAN party and setup. We had a cisco main switch with 10gig fiber uplinks that I was connected to. about 260 people present all with a gig connection.
Since I was late and my files werent hashed and available for sharing people kind of overlooked my server for the first 6 hours or so.
Then people started hitting my server.
About 5-6 People downloading at a time, and with DC++ still hashing at 80MB/sec in the background, I was hitting a wall at 80 MB/sec uploading to ethernet. I suspect this was due to the intel PCI Nic, because I got much better performance 100+ MB/sec when using my onboard adapter (realtek) even without jumbo frames enabled.
Overall I would say that my configuration was a great success, being able to handle 5 users heavy sync reads and hashing at the same time. CPU usage was right around 30% all night.
Total files served 3.4TB, thank you zfs.
