I'm in the proccess of build a budget system and don't want to spend any more money on a psu unless I need to. The case I am ordering is a raidmax that comes with a 420watt psu. Are they really that bad (from what I read in the sticky above) or will they be good enough for a budget system?
 
If you're really concerned about keeping your system stable and are on a budget, just go with Fortron/Source or Sparkle. Their power supply ratings are usually pretty conservative. Have never had a problem with any of the PSUs I purchased under this moniker.

they really are that bad. Raidmax used to have a couple of "barely mediocre" units but not any longer, now they are all junk.
The 300w Sparkle "FSP" series is one of the cheapest high quality units money can buy.

The raidmax can take out every pricey component in that rig. I really wouldn't recommend it especially if you're oc'ing...which leads me too

Will you oc and how high of an oc are you shooting for? If you raise the vcore too high then even the 300w fortron/sparkle won't cut it. If you want high cpu oc's then i'll have to recommend some of the better units found in this list
 
I wasn't planning on raising the vcore at all if I didn't have to. I wanted to get an oc of around 2.5.

if your cpu can hit 2.5ghz or greater you'll likely need a modest vcore boost. If you're determined to hit 2.5ghz or higher then you'll need a higher power/quality unit. Otherwise you risk purchasing cheap now, then realizing later that you need another psu. Psu power directly affects your oc outcome.
 
To find out if "X" power supply will be enough power, you need to do a little math

Once you've got those numbers, then you can go to the sticky and compare against those good supply for the numbers you found, to see if the supply will be powerful enough
