raiding two different drives (raid0)

is this possible?

i bought two wdse 80gb's a few months apart but when one of them came in the mail, it turned out to be a 100gb drive (80gb + free bonus 20gb)

would i be able to raid0 these two drives together?

also, im assuming theres no way to have it raid the existing data? id have to start fresh?

IIRC you can RAID them, but they will both show as 80GB. Or 160 in RAID 0

i figured something like that would happen

i can live with that i think

as for the data, id definitely have to back it all up eh

if you are RAID 0'ing, even if you didnt have to back up your data, i would highly reccomend it... if one of those drives dies or the controller looses the array, there goes all your data, with no way of recovering it.
 
I'd keep the "bonus" and just run them as separate disks. Raid-0 doesn't really do much for performance anyway, and I'd say the better reliability and extra 20GB is worth more.

raid0 doesnt do much for performance?? can you elaborate on that please?

Yeah, you would lose the 20 GIG.
Also as has been mentioned, RAID 0 is not all its cracked up to be. I had a 2 36.7 GIG Raptors in a RAID 0 setup for about 6 months. Aside from losing the Array and my data 2 times, there was absolutly no gain in performance for me. I now have a single SATA drive that I use for my OS and a single 74 GIG Raptor that I use for my games , and a couple of other drives for storage. If you use your system mainly for games and web shit, the RAID 0 will net you no noticible improvment over a decent single drive.

Thats my experience anyway.
