RAID6 now, SAS Expander later - will a RAID survive?

Hey guys,

I will (hopefully tomorrow) receive a HP SmartArray P410 (512MB/BBU). I want to run it for a couple of days until I will receive the HP SAS Expander. I wonder if a RAIDset would survive if I create it now (6 drives) and then, when the SAS Expander arrived, switch them to it.

System will be a Debian Squezze, but I guess this does not matter as I will not use a SW RAID in this case :)

Ciao

Thanks for your quick reply! Thanks!

That is what I'm also thinking - guess the RAID controller will work with IDs which will be simply "passed through" by the SAS Expander and so the RAIDset will still be working.

I've had problems switching back afterwards with a P800 with a RAID "local", moving it onto a SAS expander connected to the same controller and then moving it back "local". Mark out your drive positions before you move just in case.

This'll work fine. I have often purchased HP servers like the HP DL380's and then expanded the SAS fabric after the fact using the SAS expander and additional disk cage. I'd make sure your firmwares are up to date if you're using HP products.

Thanks for your answers!

I've meanwhile received the RAID card just 1 day before the SAS Expander and the real problem is the HP p410 itself. (I've created a thread for this here).

@tormentum Unfortunately, it's not HP hardware - that's why I run into trouble with this controller..
