I just started building a new fileserver and am curious what my best options are for OS and drive configuration. i got a cheap mobo/cpu/ram combo, and a Perc 5/i card i got off ebay. I haven't bought any new drives yet because i can't decide what to do with my old setup yet.
In my main rig i've got:
1x80gig OS
2x500 Raid1
2x320 Raid1 (onboard-intel raid matrix setup)
4x1tb jbod (rocketraid 2300) x,y,w,v: drives in windows
1tb + 500gb swapped out of a BlacX dock
I was planning on getting 4x1tb wd green drives to start off with for the perc5i but then what to do with all the old drives after i move everything over? Should i forget the Perc card and go with WHS (just dump the 4softraided drives onto a 1tb drive and use them on whs), or use the Perc card on WHS and just have two separate arrays? and what to do with the highpoint rr 2300 card?
I wanted this to be as uncomplicated as possible, less involved the less can go wrong, right? But of course i also want the most data protection for the least amount of money, while putting to best use all the hardware i already have. Any suggestions?
