Just had another 500 GB card bite the dust, and am sick of losing data.

I have a NAS sever running XP in my basement that I keep Tivo HD files (these do not stream) as well as my iTunes library. I need around 2 TB now, but would like to be able to add 1 TB drives in the future as my needs grow and storage cost decreases.

The sever is an old socket A solution, so I need a PCI card, I guess.

Any thoughts?

That is not a "hardware" RAID card, so it's performance will not be high, doesn't support online expansion so upgrading to larger drives would lose your existing data, etc.

Basically it's a cheap way to add SATA ports, but it isn't a real RAID card.. Are you stuck on XP? Because for your needs, I'd actually consider software RAID (this card is "firmware" RAID) in Linux, as that will do expansion etc easily, move to new hardware without complaint, etc etc. However it does require some linux knowledge.
 
Dell Perc 5, easy as that, they can be found on ebay for about $100 and there pretty fast.

As long as your motherboard will support it...

I've got a M2N-SLI Deluxe and the reports of whether it works or not in my motherboard is mixed. Some say it works, some say it doesn't. I'm tempted to order one to try, but I would hate to spend around $150 and have it not work :(

Oops, just realized you said this was a socket A system. The Perc 5/i is a PCI-e 8x card, so that is probably out of the question for you...

I purchased an AAR-2610SA card from ebay for around $70. It is a PCI-X card but works in standard PCI slots. It supports up to 6 drives and has online expansion. The speeds are nothing to brag about (about 27 MB/sec in HDTach) but using it just for storage seems to work for me. I'm streaming AVIs, DVDs, and MP3s from it without any issues. Just takes a long time to data to the array..
 
I don't know how much performance I need, but online extension would be sweet.

Not married to XP, but it is the most convenient.. TiVo's network software is Windows, but you can interact with the box via Linux. Plus the iTunes.
 
That AAR-2610SA looks tough to beat for the price and my needs. thanks farscapesg1.

Any array mgmt software for Windows?
 
Well, I actually installed drivers from Adaptec for it and Windows sees it as an Adaptec 2620sa. I also installed the Adaptec Storage Manager and it seems to recognize the controller card without any issues.
