Raid0 vs. Raptor

What should I get?

  • Get a Raptor and a 200gb Hd on the side for mp3s, movies etc

Ok so the HD question arises...what has better peformance and what would be better utilized by me? I game a decent amount, but I'm a cheap ass and don't know about paying that much for a raptor, I guess I could pull out $ for the 36.7gb if that's enough and then get another HD where I have my mp3s and all, and just leave games on the raptor. I really don't know can anyone help me out lol would 2 200gb (not that I need that much 200gb alone would be good enough alone) on raid0 work better than the raptor?
 
74gb raptor and 200gb seagate is my current setup w/ 250gb externl
 
funny you asked, I am building a system now and that is exactly what i was planning on doing 74Gb raptor and 200 GB sata WD. That is the conclusion I came up with after reading for 50 hours!
 
I'd go for 2 200's in raid-1. That way you can stand losing a disk and keep playing while your rma goes thru.

A 74 raptor and 200 storage is good too. Your choice.
 
uhm I am not an expert but I don't think you can lose a drive with raid 1 and keep playing or do anything. You will not lose your data but you will have to get another drive.

But in all reality, who doesn't back their important shit up on cd/dvd nowadays. I had a raid 0 for the longest time, and then I got a single raptor. The raptor is faster in everyway.

The other night, I had a 4gb torrent downloading, burning a another 4gb to a dvd and was playing BF1942. If you ever look at your hard drive fragmentation after downloading a torrent, it just DESTROYs your continuity on the disk, thus making it work harder. Plus I was burning a bunch of movies, and loading BF1942 levels (which are HD intensive). That raptor didn't even miss a beat.
 
did any of you read that recent article from maximum pc (which they found out about on anand.) that proves that raid 0 does zilch for gaming! yep it didn't make one diff. in the fps. busted up the common myth that it speeds up games.
 
Thanks for the help guys bought myself a nice 36gig raptor I'm planning on having another like 200gig drive play along with it...only a few more things until my rig is complete sucks that no one has sata drives here f/s

It's totally silly to think that hard disk speed will have any effect on FPS. HD speed affects load times, and that's it. Did you think the game was being run directly off the disk?

Also, IIRC that article used a crappy onboard RAID controller and not a dedicated card.
 
so this was quasi dead but...

I've upgraded to a neo2 and 64 3000 and now am going to add a hard drive. At first I was sure the 36 gb raptor was the way to go, but as I read around reviews and such it looks like a 7200 like the seagate barracude 7200.7 120gb is damn near equal in performance and cheaper to boot.

am I missing something here?

I bought myself a Raptor 36 Gb for OS and apps and a WD Caviar SE 120 GB for storage. I don't collect junk so this setup is plenty along with my DVD-RW DL burner and my CD-RW burner.
 
i've done the raid thing before, back with the first durons, anyways i'mnot doing anything that would really benefit from raid. I just play half life and homework

i was just curious if there is really a significant advantage in going to the first gen raptors over the larger and cheaper barricuda
 
I don't know about the Seagate Baracuda's (SATA ones). But the 74GB Raptor drives are great. Not too noisy and very fast. Virtually everything about the 36GB model if not everything was corrected. Not to say that the 36GB drive isn't a good one. It's a good deal faster than alot of drives.
