RAID w/o F6 driver?

I have a question, does the south-bridge on current P965, and D975 motherboards for the C2D processors natively support RAID, and does this still require the F6 to install RAID drivers during the Windows XP install?

BTW are these RAID controllers true RAID or are they still "software RAID" systems. Because I figured if they were "true" RAID systems it would all work invisibley and if anything they would act as a legacy drive to older operating systems that do not support SATA etc.

I've seen other SATA RAID controllers that claim to be 'native' RAID etc etc, I wonder if those are "true" RAID controllers ... now I'm just getting confused.

One last thing about the Intel south-bridge for those motherboards, some say they support the Intel Matrix storage system, is that like RAID5 controllers, where you can strip more than one drive?

From my understanding, you won't be installing windows xp on the chipset based raid array without a driver.

Without RAID, I have heard that using the non-AHCI mode for the sata controller will allow winXP to install wihtout F6
 
There are some raid controllers that have drivers built into windows. Most your newer stuff will not be though.
