Quick Background.
Ironically, my Maxtor 120 Gig HDD decided to act upon hearing the news about being bought out by Seagate. Since my Seagate 80 Gig runs my PC....
Seriously, my Maxtor 120 decided to have a mind of its own. It basically decides to lose its mind and leaves me without basically 50 gigs of data wiped off the face of the earth. Luckily, I made a back up on another HDD w/OS installed (XP pro) I am working on getting that fairly recent copy of my files onto another disk.
Alright here is my question.
HDD #1 Win 2K Seagate 80 #1 current drive
HDD #2 WIn Xp Seagate 80 #2 currently holds a back up from September 05 of D Drive
HDD #3 Storage Maxtor 120 acting flaky like my last maxtor so I am learning my mistakes from the last major HDD failure.
Ok I know my Seagates are basically bulletproof at this point. What I would like to do is salvage my backup data from HDD#2 and get it onto HDD #1 temporarily. I did get HDD#3 working somewhat but I do not trust the drive at this point. I figure HDD#1 has enough space to handle the back up data. This is simple enough for me to perform.
Now once I get my data sitch handled, I would like to create a RAID 1(Mirrored correct?)set up so my data can be more secure. I know I need both drives to be the same size to work. I was going to basically go to format HHD#2 for a clean drive.
Should I do anything else to secure my data before I perform my "operation"?
Can I create that RAID after my OS has been up and running or is this going to be one of those "need to reinstall the OS jobs...." ?
Which drivers should I use? (Abit NF-2S Version 2 MB) i.e is one driver set better than another for what I want to do.
Is thier anything else I should know about before i do this?
I really don't like know my data is limbo. Years of downloads and photos can be gone in an instant. Since I have BYOCing back in 1998, I always understood the importance of back ups and off machine storage and would build 2 HDDs into my machine.
Thank you for the answers to my questions. I am pretty sure I am on the right track with what I want to. I just never did the raid thing before. Please no maxtor vs seagate BS. Personally, I had 3 maxtors and 1 WD fail on me in the past 4 years. Ironically, I have a 20 gig Maxtor I bought in 98 still kicking go figure.
