ok, well as of right now I have 2 HDDs, a 40gig(OS and programs) and a 250gig(Storage - video, music etc). Now for Christmas I got another 250gig hdd and I was wondering what I should do? Should I just make the extra 250gig my main hdd and chuck the 40? Should I set up a RAID? If so, how?...never done it before. Also, if setting up a RAID is my best option would I be able to keep all the data on my 250gig hdd or would I have to format it?

I'm really a n00b about RAID, I know what it is but I've just never had the reason to set it up until now.

You should see a nice little performance boost moving your OS over to one of the newer drives. I would use the new 250 as my C drive, leave the existing 250 for storage and loose the 40 (or maybe dedicate it to music / media).

To raid or not to raid. I'd say the latter, negative on the raid, for a number of reasons. First and foremost being that the performance is not what you will be expecting. Second is that you will need some way to backup your data before creating the array because you will need to format the drives as a pair as you mentioned. And third would be the post raid integrity... now you would have 500GB of unreliable storage. Loose one drive and you loose everything.
