If a person has a RAID 1 array with 2 80GB hard drives and adds a third to make a RAID 5 array, does the amount of storage space increase or stay the same?
 
Goes up to 160GB. RAID-5 capacity forumla:

(Number of drives in the array - 1) * (capacity of smallest drive in the array)
 
Yep. If you use identical drives in a RAID-5 array, your space loss is equal to one of the drives.
