This is probably a dumb question... but...

Can I build a Raid 0 with a wd800jb and a wd800lb? I already have the jb but accidently ordered an LB not noticing the difference initially. They're very similar except that the JB has the 8mb cache and the LB has a 2mb, but the LB is faster due to higher data density and fluid bearings...

I know, I know... probably not. Just please let me know if anyone thinks it might work.
 
Yes you can, it just won't be as fast as 2 similar disks.

The arguments against raid 0 have been presented a jillion times before, so I won't reiterate, just say make backups.
 
Of course, thanks for the advice though. I have a primary storage drive seperate from the raid already.

Here's another questions. Do most on-board raid controllers (on motherboard that is) support raid between more than 2 drives? I know this is possible using add in controllers, but have never tried it using an on-board one.

For example, I'm buying a dfi lanparty nforce4 ultra-d... it has 4 sata controllers AND supports raid between sata and pata... You think I could hook up 3 80gb drives into one raid array?

Probably yes, but only in the form of 0+1. They won't support 3 way raid0. You may be able to do it in software with XP, but I haven't done this. It shouldn't be any slower than "hardware", though - raid 0 is easy on the CPU.
