I just ordered 3 three 37gb raptors for my computer. I am trying to decide if I want to use RAID 0 or RAID 5.

RAID 0 is pretty self explanitory, but I keep getting different descriptions when I ask a person what RAID 5 is or do some research on ther internet.

Would using RAID 5 increase performance, as opposed to just using 1 single drive? Also if a drive fails in RAID 5 would I loose data? Would the computer stop working? I just need to know the basics of RAID 5 and why its the most popular RAID.

First off, 36gb raptors aren't a great deal, sorry to say. They've got performance that's below-par as compared to modern non-raptor disks; the 74s are neck-and-neck with new ones, and they're a substantial increase over the 36es.

Second, raid 5 will decrease performance but improve reliability in the long run. It saves "parity" to the drives, so if one dies, the data that was on it can be rebuilt by the remaining drives.

 
As far as I know, it requires an extra drive to do the parity (I beleive it is done at the hardware level, windows wiull just see a RAID 5 array as a big disk and will nto ahve to do anythign specail with it). To do it with hardware yypically requires a very expesnive card, especailly for big arrays (more than 4 disks). It is a very reliable way to store data though, and if you loose the parity, the array does not even go down during rebulding, just slows down a lot. If you have the money, it is the professional solution to your problem, offering redunancy without losing half of your drives to mirrors, as in raid 0 or 10.

They seem pretty similar to me, and yes the raptors perform much better than a normal 7,500 hard drive. Where did you hear that?
