RAID Problem: 750G on Sil 3114

I have a Silicon Image 3114 RAID controller (Integrated on my ABIT IC7-MAX3 motherboard). I've been running 2 Seagate 7200.9 300G drives on that controller in RAID-1 (Mirrored) for quite a while with no problems. The drives have SATA2 (300) interfaces.

I recently swapped out the 300G drives for a pair of 750G Seagates with more or less the same specs, they are 7200.10 models, same SATA2 interface.

Now when I try to boot into the RAID firmware to start mirroring, the system hangs when detecting the drives. Anybody know if there is a capacity limit with the 3114? I can't find any mention of this in the docs that I can find. As this is an intergrated chip, I can't update the firmware (Currently it's 5.0.31) unless ABIT releases a new system BIOS, which does not look promising as the last one was in November of 2004!

I'm going to try putting the drives into SATA1 (150) mode with a jumper, just wondered if anyone here had an answer!

let's start with basics:
the drives have tested out ok on their own (seatools)? [check whether drives are good]
Have you looked at add-in card firmware releases for the SiL3114 to see whether a "large drive support" bug/ feature was fixed/ added?[check whether it's a firmware issue]
 
1) Yep in fact I'm using them now as straight drives, on the same controller with the RAID Firmware turned off. Both work fine and have been formatted and diskchecked multiple times with no problems.

2) Excellent idea, will check the latest firmware for the 3114 card and see what they've fixed (or added).

BTW setting the drives to SATA-150 made no diff.

I don't know that particular RAID controller, but does it come with a Windows GUI "control panel?" If so, have you tried creating the array through that?
