RAID Nub question

I am thinking about moving to a RAID setup and was wondering where I could get more info on the subject. Do I need to buy a RAID card? I am using the athlon 64 3200+ on the asus k8v se dLx. Are there any comprehensive guides to setting up RAID?

do some research on all raid types before you make a decision to buy anything, you can do software raid but hardware is the best option.

Do some reasearch on raid 1,0, 0+1, 5 and raid 5+0 before you make any decisions so you know what the benifits and drawbacks are to the above forms so you can tailor it to your needs.

raid 0 for performance and the raptor's from fry's look good. Will I need a raid card?

not on the K8V.

make sure you run the raid off of the VIA controller, not the promise one (as you'll be on the actual HT link not bound by PCI bus).

What kinds of things do you use your computer for? RAID can slow you down depending on what you use it for. If you deal with big files a lot, then RAID is great. But it can hurt for lots of little small files.... And I'd consider a good SCSI drive before going IDE/SATA RAID, personally.

Used for games (CS and FarCry), pics from my canon a75, and surfing mainly. Should I just hook up a single raptor and use an eide for backup?

For most of that, I'd say avoid RAID. But for newer games like FarCry, it should speed things up a bit.

You're not going to get a lot out of RAID. In fact, the only RAID I could recomend is RAID 1, simply for backup in case one HD fails...

Raid 0 won't bring you much extra performance for what you're planning to do. Using a single drive or both drives independently might be a better option.

JBOD a single 74GB Raptor and enjoy the benefits, with none of the risks of a RAID array. For video encoding, RAID0 or 5 is the shit, for everything else, a single SATA drive is great.

I ran Twin Raptros in RAID-0 and I hardly noticed any difference than my Single Raptor now. Plus, losing a RAID-) array is a hair pulling nightmare... I know firsthand.
