raid help with asus a8n-e

i cant seem to google or find the raid drivers for this board on the asus website. I have set my BIOS to enable RAID, then i have each of my 2 IDE drives (same channel) set to enabled for raid ability. After setting both drives to be RAID-able.

I hit f10 to setup my mirrored array, it says healthy then boots from the cd, i hit f6 and I assume all i need is to find the drivers and add a floppy disk to my system temporarily for raid driver install and all will go well?

Do my BIOS settings seem correct? Is there a way i can just throw the drivers on a cd and put the cd in my other cdrom drive?

edit: i went ahead and installed XP on my system w/o the RAID, can i simply create the array now and have it sync my data to the slave drive? One more thing, being as these drives are on the same IDE channel ... am i going to see a large decrease in efficiency?
 
I'm guessing that you're referring to RAID 1? If so, then you must hit F6 once prompted for a 3rd party driver, then insert the drivers from ASUS. If you don't let Windows know about the RAID's existance before you start installing Windows, it will not mirror correctly. If done correctly, you will only see one disk present when you have to choose a logical drive during the install.

The sucky thing about XP is that you have to throw them on a floppy, and you can't use a CD (unless you slipstream the drivers into the XP setup).

Whenever I had set up IDE RAID in the past, I put the drives on separate IDE channels. I don't think this makes a HUGE difference, but it made me feel better :).

Also, once you're install has completed on the mirror, make sure to remove the IDE/power from one of the drives and try starting Windows without it. It's just a good test to see if the controller/drives are operating correctly. In that case, it should be able to boot with only one drive. Again, this is if it's a RAID 1.
 
man this is a nightmare. i went to setup, then realized i had to recreate my array first, no biggy. recreated the array, then went to install windows. all of a sudden it couldnt read my floppy that took 30 minutes to get out of a server tower that i had in the BACK of my shed. i restarted again, then it found my raid driverS. then it couldnt create a partition for windows even though i just created it.

after that i restarted, wiped my array, rebuilt it, erased my disks (which i had XP installed on last night, one of the drives anyways) and then proceeded to load windows again. the next time everything was going alright .... then poof, my near flawless cd cant read idecoi.dll so i restart again, load raid drivers fine, wipe/create partition fine, then it cant read the file from the cd again so i skip it. it loads, restarts itself and starts to install windows ... again during setup it cant find idecoi.dll so i skip it and go on. my biggest break was the 35 compatibility warnings during setup.

now i am in windows. i dont even want to think about trying to repair my installation, my cd is practically flawless and worked fine last night. im now getting errors when installing the software from the Mobo cd that i did not get last night either. For some reason it feels the need to tell me there are no more files to copy.

i also started smelling an electrical burning type smell but everything looks fine and nothing it shorting out or even warm. i placed a fan in front of my mirrored drives. my chieftec case seems so small or oddly configured bc everything is smashed into a corner. *sigh* it seems to be running ....... with this raid array all done .... wont a repair once i get a fresh copy of an xp disk work just fine theoretically? i do repairs about once a day at work. BTW my copy of XP is legit as is my key. i can burn a cd off at work for my repair so im not worried about paying bill gates any more.

i also blew up one of my neon tubes before starting! now it doesnt want to restart..... and it cant install my raid controller in windows, WTF!!!.

how well would a repair do on my HD i had in my athlon XP system? id have to reinstall mobo stuff but fuck i cant get any of this shit to work fresh.

sounds like you should run Memtest.
