I have two WD 640 blacks in RAID 0 and I want to test them to see if they are factory correct, no bad sectors, etc. I d/l WD data tools but they don;t seem to work on a RAID array. Locked my system up. I'd also like to test the speed to see if the drives and RAID array are performing correctly.

So what HD speed/Diag tool are you all using?
 
I had this issue aswell when I wanted to run a diagnostic on my buddys old 74GB Raptors in RAID0. Since they where RAID'ed together the WD Diagnostic utility would not see them. Interested in a workaround for this aswell.

As for speed tests, HD Tune/HD Tach take care of that.

So is there a way to do a SMART diagnostics like WD Data Life tools does, but on RAID?
 
Im not sure but I think that you could use a Debian Install CD to check each disk for bad sectors. Im not sure if there is still a utility for that in there.
 
I think your on to something. I was thinking maybe I could boot from an external HD, but the 640s would still be Raided. It's strange that you can't get a SMART reading when the drives are in RAID, but it makes sense. I'm sure if WD wanted to, then could develop software to do that.
