Raid drive error -HELP!

I have two 400 GIG Western Digital hard drives on a Promise Raid controller using Raid 0. When I boot up, it says that the raid has failed. If I look at the disks in the Raid Utility, one drive shows up as assigned to Array 1 and the other assignment says free. If I try to rebuild the raid, it says that the raid is offline. If I try to define an array, it says that the drives either failed or are disconnected . I powered each individual drive by connecting the Power Cable and verified that each drive powers up ok and the drives don't make any strange noises.

If I connect each drive individually, they show up as Array 1 in the Promise utility. I am stumped on what could be wrong or how I can verify that one of the drives hasn't gone bad.

Any suggestions before I take it to a data recovery service? I really need the data off of these drives.
