I was reading the scsi ignorance thread and I came upon a question. Is there any performance gain or anything to using a sata raid controller card as opposed to using the onboard raid chip on newer motherboards? I was just curious, I mean I know that raid cards can be used to break the 137 gb barrier on older motherboards, but I just wondered if there was any significant boost in performance to using them with new motherboards.
 
The onboard solutions many times are the exact same chips that will be on PCI cards anyways. On-board promise RAID is the exact same as if you buy a low-end promise PCI card. That being said, once you start getting into the "real" RAID cards that have expandable cache and hardware XOR engines for doing RAID-5 parity calculations, then there is a definite difference between them and onboard.
 
Ahhh..okay...just wondering. Out of curiosity I went browsing raid cards at the egg and found a sata raid card for right at $300 and was wondering why anyone would need that. I guess you would if you needed large scale storage...servers perhaps? But then again, wouldn't servers use scsi drives and not sata drives? So if that is the case, why would you want a $300 raid card? Oh well, just wondering! Other than that, I just thought it was an interesting topic to look into. :D
 
You would want a $300 or in my case $500 RAID card based on your needs and what you plan on doing... Like in my case 8 ports, RAID5 support, Online Capacity Expansion, warranty, reputation, and so on....
 
Ahhh...gotcha'! So, would the average home user (okay, let's face it if we are concerned about raid arrays, we are more than the average user!!) not need an expensive raid card like those mentioned above? Like I said, I don't need one or anything, just interested in the topic...btw, does anybody have any info. links about raid cards, configurations, etc.

Most 'home' users would really only need to run a raid 0 for increased performance... or raid 1 if they wanted data redundency. The onboard cntrollers SHOULD give you fine performance for this... sometimes the onboard controller will only allow 2 drives, and not 4, so yuo cannot run 0+1 at the same time. They are kinda like a 'lite' version. I run raid 5 in a small business server, it has the ability of running 8 drives, and up to 256MB sdram....
