looking for a new raid card for a new server primarily doing virtualization running ESXi. i was looking at the dell perc5 and perc6 with battery backup but i am leaning more towards raid 10 now.

any suggestions? my budge is low, like around $200

very nice, after reading up it seems sufficient. battery backup is a nice feature but not necessary for me.

too bad it doesn't come with cable, add on $30 for that. still not bad though

How dows that compare to the Perc 6 in terms of speed? the Perc 6 has more option like RAID 5/6

I have zero experience with the Perc cards. However all of my 2405's in RAID10 are speedy and reliable. I have about a half dozen running for a year and a half strong now. 24/7/365 :)

The I would suggest looking at the Dell Perc 6i. I have been using it for my Hyper-V,Server 2008 and ESXi 4.1 machine you can see here: http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1036869497&postcount=208

The Perc 6i has been rock solid and very fast and had no problems at all with anything.

You can get it for a lot cheaper also, here is a great thread on it: http://www.overclock.net/raid-controllers-software/359025-perc-5-i-raid-card-tips.html

here are better pics of my card with a fan mod i did: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1583137

$13 over budget, but more "future-proof" if you will ... 6Gb + more RAID levels.

I don't own one...just comparing what I saw in this thread to it ...
I own PERC 5i and H700.

I like/prefer PERCs

thanks for all the suggestions.

i liked the perc5 and perc6 and i know they are great. you can get em on ebay dirt cheap too. but raid 10 seems to be the best solution for me.

hmm ... just corrected my post.

When you add shipping + cables ... that $205 card becomes $232 shipped ??

but ya....stick to what you feel comfy with.

Card is 244. $44 != $13.

And you are correct ..... the difference between them is $18 from Newegg to door
after i actually added items to cart - isaw shipping got combined.

Basically just pointing out that there was better bang for buck for less than $20 difference.
We blew the $200 budget from jump when you consider store to door total. :D

ps....@ OP.. a quick look on the bay show PERC5i going for ~$70 to $100 with BBU

I'm after a RAID 10 solution that's reliable and works out of the box. From digging around about the cards I've seen mentioned in other threads, are the comments about the Dell and the Adaptec correct?

LSI 9240-8i won't work with my Gigabyte board apparently. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118128
Adaptec 2405 has no BBU.
Dell Perc 5i needs a pin mod and a cooler mod.
Dell Perc 6i need a cooler mod.
