I've got 6 M4 256gb ssds and I want to put them in raid0, are there any good solid cards on the market that will squeeze out every bit of performance without going into prices similar to gpus?

What specific workloads are you looking for this array? VM, Database, etc? Knowing more about your particular needs will help with the best card for the situation.
 
Can you confirm that the setup works, because the m4's were(still?) having problems with some of the sas raid controllers.
 
First I read it here then somewhere in this thread people were having trouble updating fw with ssd being on the sas controller. I hope that new fw fixed the problem: Improved compatibility with certain SAS expanders and peripheral RAID cards.

Its actually quite common that firmware updates only work with the onboard SATA ports, and not only onboard but usually only the primary ones supported by the CPU or chipset and not aux motherboard controllers. This is not just for SSD's but HDD's as well. Also, if you have a choice of to create a boot disc to update the drivers or use a windows utility, it is suggested to do the boot disc as it is less likely to cause problems instead of running the update in windows.
 
I didn't see one problem mentioning LSI cards.

If the drive is in an array, I have never seen a firmware update work because no single drive is available to the OS.
 
QUESTION ANSWERED HERE

the latest firmware update for the m4 fixes all problems regarding 6gb/s sas raid controllers. the problem was that on boot, drives would randomly drop and you might have to restart it once or twice to make the array whole. it should not happen anymore assuming you update all of your drives using the onboard sata ports. if you're buying new m4s, the firmware may already be applied for you as well and you'd have to do nothing.

Its not a matter specific to the LSI, it is an issue with the updater software that most drive manufacturers put out. If the drive is set to pass through single, sometimes it will work and sometimes not and it varies with each updater utility and each add-in card. If the drive is part of an array, it will never work because of how the drive is presented to the OS.
