I have a spare Dell PowerVault 745n that works fine with the original identical 80gb drives. I am trying to use some random drives that I have so I can make a raid 5 array. I know that it will only use the smallest drives capacity in all the drives and that is fine. I have a 640GB, and 3 500GB drives all from different brands. I combined them all in a raid 5 that is 1.3TB but one of the drives will have an error and becomes greyed out on the dell raid card management. At first I thought it was a bad drive but I replaced it with a known good one and it still fails to build the whole array. I do not have an OS installed yet so this is all low level configuration.
The card that I am using is a Dell CERC SATA 1.5/6CH which seems to be an OEM adaptec. It has a hardware limit of 2TB per array and I am not yet there so it can't be the issue. People have also reported running 750gb drives on that and none of my drives are that big.Any body have experience with a raid array using non identical drives?
