RAID Arrays with Backplanes

Consider moving an established RAID array comprised of SATA drives from a machine without a backplane to a machine that does utilize a SATA backplane. Assuming you'd power down as normal and just make sure to keep which drives to to which ports, are there going to be any problems? Or would this be trivial?
 
SATA backplanes are basically a straight through connection pretty much I believe, theres no real magic to them as they arn't like SCSI backplanes.
 
You shouldn't run into any problems as long as you keep them in the same ports. SATA may be a bit different, and it depends on the controller card, but SCSI backplanes will get picky when you start mixing and matching.
 
It mostly depends upon the design of the backplane and the raid controller. But unless it's something exceptionally creative like it's a modified SCSI backplane that now accepts SATA drives (which do exist, and are a pain in the tuckus), you should be fine so long as the controller still recognizes the same drives as being on the same channels as before. There's really no magic to backplanes (active or passive). Mostly all they are is a more convenient way to slap drives in and out of machines. In my experience, if anything is going to choke from a configuration standpoint, it's far more likely to be the controller.
 
I hooked up 8 SATA drives in a SuperMicro 3U case with a SATA backplane. It is a straight through connection, there are 16 sata connectors on the backplane. It makes it a little easier to route the SATA cables to my Areca RAID card. The power to the drives is handled by two regular old fashioned HD conectors to the backplane. So that helps a lot in reducing the number of cables. The real pain in the *ss is hooking up the drive lights. There was no description at all in the Supermicro manual. I had to zoom in on the picture of the backplane to get some info. I was able to find a better description in the knowledge base of Areca... Good luck. Ah got it : Supermicro case CSE-933T-R760 (R760 is redundant 760 watt power supply...)
