RAID 5 Performance benefits

Hey folks.

I'm having some trouble quantifying the read and write performance benefit from using a hardware raid 5 card. I have read Tom's article - but that seems to concentrate on I/O's per second - but I'm also interested in raw (sustained/burst) transfer speeds. (I have been searching specifically though for info on the card I expect to buy - the Areca 1220 - assuming I can finda n SLI MB with a PCI 8X slot in adddition to the two 16X slots, the second one of which I'd like to reserve for a video card if possible)

Can someone point me in the right direction?
 
You're right... I did see this yesterday - I dismissed it because the cards reviewed are PCI-X. I should however read it for the overall performance benefits, something that didn't hit me until you mentioned it :)
 
I have an Areca 1220 running in my 2nd PCIe 16x slot.

Here are some HDTach results for RAID0, not done any RAID5 benches yet.

But that's 2 different runs on the same array.

But it's still an incredible set of numbers. 4ea. 74GB Raptors - WOW!!!
And 4ea. 7K500's

That's like US$2500.00 worth of drives - not counting the ARC-1220

Are you trying to compete with Doug on hard drive space?

Well spotted :) I will re-run HDTach tonight.

Who is Doug btw, and how much HDD space does he have? :)
 
I'm Doug, see sig. I don't have any awesome flagships like 7K500s, more of a motley crew. Those Areca numbers look good, although you are brave man to run 4x RAID-0 with 2TB of data.
 
Sorry to hijack, but I currently own 2 74gb raptors on raid 0, would the performance be THAT great to buy 2 more?

(i'm considering upgrading my computer this holiday season)
 
Awesome synthetic bench results != awesome application level performance. Yes 4x WD740GD will deliver awesome transfer performance, but load times will not be significantly shorter for applications/windows/games, certainly not 75% shorter. At best, you will see an improvement of 10-15. Many applications will see no improvement at all over a single WD740GD.

Yup I certainly am and it is a risk, but I backup that drive on a nightly basis. RAID1+0, 3, 5, 6 is great for data availability but shouldn't be used as a replacement for data backups.

Those are weird-looking graphs - did you do the "short" or the "long" test? I would've expected the Hitachis to keep up to the Raptor in terms of STR.
