raid 5, or a single raptor?

Trying to decide where I'm going with my storage solution...

Which would you rather have?

1. A single 36gb raptor for OS/Games, and say a 200gb 8mb SATA drive for storage

OR

2. 4x 80Gb Maxtor 8mb SATA drives in a raid 5 array

I figure the formatted capacity of either would be around 225gb, and the raptor setup is gonna be faster, but not as redundant.

Just want some feedback, maybe to hear something I don't already know - don't need a value analysis though, as I've quite aware of the costs of things.

If you were going to go with raid 5 - which 4 port or more SATA card would you buy - on this point I could use schooling on cost/benefit.
 
Depends.

Software RAID - wouldn't touch!
Hardware RAID ($$$$$$$) - cool, but pricey.

I say 2x 74GB Raptors as standalone drives :)
 
The first one is better.

Leave RAID alone entirely unless you want to read up enough on it to learn when it does and doesn't help. For example, write performance on a RAID 5 is sub-par, and pagefile performance will pretty much blow.

yes but raid 5 on a server with 8GB of ram probably wont have much of a swap file.

i recommend the Asus board with Raid5, get 8HDD's all Seagate 120GB NCQ 8MB cache and raid them all, that will be pretty quick. while your at it, get 2GB of kingston hyper X ram, its cheap, fast, and kingston ram rarely has errors unlike OCZ
 
what are you so concerned about protecting? i'm sure you'd be fine with 2 74gig raptors. anything important just backup to cd atleast once a week.
 
2 raptors? no. Get the one Raptor for OS/apps/swap/etc. and get the biggest drive you can afford for storage. You don't need a super-fast drive to stream MPEGs from, you need big. Hell, even 5400RPM is fine.

If you really really care about your data, you can do RAID, but it can be quite a headache, and really the best way to do it is with a hotspare, since any failure will mean a terribly vulnerable array, (multiple points of failure) and not to mention much slower reads.

I personally use only Adaptec. They're quite compatible, and work with ANY (and I mean any) ASPI driver set. I'm personally planning to do a 5 drive RAID-5 array with the biggest drives I can muster. I'm trying to go for 2TB usable wih a dedicated hotspare. That's 500GB drives if you're wondering. I may just have to do 6x400GB, though since the 500's will most likely be mucho expensive.

they are more or less opposites

if you require redundant storage and performance space
both is likely cheaper than say the efficiency hit of 0+1
(and its extremely unlikely youd need "perfomance" storage)

so either weight your divergent needs and choose
or get both ;)
