RAID 5 need a reformat?

This may be a dumb question..idk. I've never made a RAID array. I was looking at doing a RAID 5, but do I have to reformat all the drives to do this? or can it somehow be done with information already on the drives? I would need like..alot more hard drives if I need to reformat all of them then move the data back on them.
 
Your RAID controller should have a manual that explains all that....unless you are using Linux RAID, in which there is lots of documentation on the internet, as well on these forums :)
