One of my drives keeps degrading. When I try to replace it, a second disk reports as being non-raid and makes the array unbootable. I can however put the bad disk in, reset it to non-raid and then boot and rebuild? Extremely annoying, anyone have any ideas? What's the point of raid 5 if I can't replace a 'bad drive'? I am thinking its either this shitty motherboard, or the Matrix controller itself.........

the intel matrix raid, on intel boards, is incredibly robust (even if it is pseudo-raid). are you using WD drives? they have an error recovery issue that often causes them to drop out of raid arrays.

They're actually seagates, see sig of conroe system. Its very strange, this one drive drops out but I can rebuild it all the time. It takes like 20 hours though to rebuild it. I just read about the jumper for the 300 transfer speed, I'll have to check that.
