Hey guys, im about to pull the trigger on 4 Seagate 500GB Drives but ive having some issues deciding on a RAID 5 Controller card... i have PCI and PCI-Express1x to work with, and i was thinking either 4 or 8 port sata controller. ive been looking at newegg and nothing is really consistant as far as reviews so i was hoping you guys could help me out on my decision. My budget is between $100-250 for the card, but for $250 it would have to be an 8 port. I dont have any specific card that i have my heart set on, so im open to any suggestions as far as controller cards go. Thx guys

The Highpoint 2300 (at $125) is a good choice only if you're never going to move beyond 4 disks in this array. The 2220 is probably a better choice in the short term but it's limited to PCI speeds. The 2320 is $215, 8 ports... and x4 pci express. It may be possible to cut the end out of your pci express slot to fit it in, but that'll definitely void your warranty.

You did mean PCI Express, not PCI-X, correct? If it's really PCI-X, 2220 all the way.

i think im going to try out that Highpoint 2300, the only thing i am worried about is moving the array to an 8 port controller when i decide to upgrade in a couple months, i have other drives to use on the 4 port so it wont go to waste, but how would that transfer work?

Highpoint supposedly lets one migrate across controllers since the 1640. I can't think off the top of my head of anyone who's done it, but Highpoint's been fairly reliable with their stuff. No reason it shouldn't.

welp, i just ordered the highpoint 2300 and four of those 500GB HD's, i cant wait for it to show up so i can sleep at night, hehe. thankx alot fer your help man
