HELP! I just got a notice from Vista that one of my drives had a S.M.A.R.T. event and is reporting that it may fail.

Both drives in my RAID 1 array are Seagate 750GB drives. I have a Asus Maximus Formula motherboard with the ICH9R southbridge.

Can I just buy another Seagate 750GB drive and swap it in without riskingg the other healthy Seagate drive's data?

By the way, DON'T buy drives online from Newegg or any online retailer for that matter. I think UPS roughed up my drives pretty good. this is the second drive out of the 3 I bought from Newegg that has had a S.M.A.R.T. error in the last 4 days.

Give Spinright a run, if you feel like spending the $80, imho, its a good investment. This program has saved my kiester a bunch of times. Donno how itl do with a raid array.

and yeah, in theory on raid 1 you can just pull one drive out and the software is sposed to sync them both automatically. But I don't know how, I've never done it.

Quite true. I would first back up the remaining 750 gigs on another drive(s) then get a 2nd one, and recreate the mirror. Software RAID can be a bit finicky when trying to re-establish a mirror.
