Is it possible to implement RAID 1 when starting with a single existing drive and adding another drive?

Would one simply image the first drive onto the new HDD and then config the RAID?

It's all new for me so and guidance on this would be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

I believe most Hardware raid controllers can do this for a Data Volume. You simply choose your Source Drive and Add a Mirror drive to the array.

I don't believe it is possible with a boot volume, but I could be wrong.

I am not sure if Software RAID can/can't as I have not used any form of this. I am also not a fan of Software raid as it does impact overall system performance.

A FakeRAID (onboard) or hardware controller, depending on the controller, will allow you to do this.
As for software RAID, MDADM, Apple RAID, and GMirror will not allow this, as the RAID partitions and RAID-mount need to be built first.

I'm not sure for Windows software RAID, but I wouldn't recommend using that until it is a last resort as it is not very reliable or stable.
