Raid 1 mirroring Question

Hi all,

I set up a Windows 2003 server with 2x 250gb SATA drives in Raid 1. My question is if 1 drive goes south can I boot to just 1 until I get a replacement? If so is there anything special that I would need to do in order to make that happen? When I get the drive replaced would I be able to re-establish the raid again? Thx!

Software or hardware RAID? What RAID controller if hardware?

The answer is Yes you can boot off of one untill the bad one is replaced. But if you are doing software RAID you might have to do something to get it to boot. eg: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/113977/ If you are doing hardware RAID, if the controller has any brains at all, it should just boot with a warning of a broken mirror untill you replace the dead drive.

Reestablishing the mirror does take time and impact performance untill it is done. (basically copying the date onto the replaced drive)

Yes this is a hardware raid. I tried to run a test of it last night...I unplugged a drive and tried to boot. I just kept getting an error and it wouldn't let me boot with just 1 drive. It wanted me to remove the relationship before it would let me boot. I didn't want to try that considering I was already finished installing the OS and configuring it.

Well it sounds like the BIOS on that card is set to not boot off of a broken mirror.. that kind of makes it less usefull in my book.

it virtually defeats the purpose of RAID - increasing uptime. If you cannot boot off a broken mirror, why mirror at all? In the end, you should be backing up in order to prevent data loss (at least that is what people on these forums are telling me ;) )

Indeed. But if it lets you break the mirror without losing the data, you can still boot off of one disk.. The question is if it will also build a mirror from a drive without losing the data..

But optimally it should boot off of a broken mirror, and do an online rebuild as well, with SATA hotswap that is.

And RAID is not Backup, RAID is uptime, Backup is to keep your data safe.

I will also be backing up to an external source I was just really hoping to avoid downtime. Sounds like I may have to do some more research on this Mobo's hardware raid. Thx for all of your help!
