RAID 1 - How is the data written?

I'm considering a raid-1 for my new build, as I'm somewhat paranoid about data loss (some of the files on my current storage drive have been on 5 HD's over the years). I was wondering, though: if I set up a raid-1, and then take out one drive and plug it straight into another machine, will that second comp be able to read it as a single disk ok? Or will I need to set it up in another raid for that comp to access it?

Depends if its software RAID or hardware RAID. And even then there are other considerations.

I was going to use the onboard sata raid controller on the supermicro h8dce. not sure which chipset is the raid controller - it's either the NVIDIA nForce4 Professional 2200 or the nVidia nForce Pro 2050.
