Raid 1 - Bad blocks and lost files

I don't know if I am just losing my mind or over/under-analyzing things here, but I am a bit confused.

On a Win2k3 server system I have, there are (2) 160gig Maxtor SATA drives, on the Sil Raid controller in Raid 1 configuration. The drives were purchased together in August of 2004.

Back around May or June, I started receiving Disk I/O errors in Event Log, reporting bad blocks. As you can imagine, it has only gotten worse. Chkdsk will only fully run upon bootup, and sometimes Win2k3 forces itself into it anyway upon restart (say, after Windows Update patches).

So I am starting to lose files, and have an increasingly large "found.001" folder on every partition. Luckily, I have always had a functioning backup system in place, since this is a server, outside of just the 2 drives in Raid.

Now, it happened again today, quite badly - took over an hour to get through chkdsk on startup, so I believe it's time for me to bite the cost and grab two new hard drives, but my question is...why did I lose these files using a Raid 1 setup? Are bad blocks that occur on one drive automagically carried over to the other since they are mirrored? This doesn't seem to make Raid 1 a great redundency option, except for total disk failure, since individual files still get wiped out if partial corruption occurs.

PS. Bad block/sectors reports are errors from the drive itself...is there a chance it could actually be bad cables or a controller? SATA seems to be much better then the old IDE in this reguard so I am leaning towards the drives.
 
Yes, the bad sectors do get mirrored over the raid array via virtual bad sectors on the other hd. Don't like raid much because of that.
