Hi,
I have 2 hds in my computer, a 120 gig and an 80gig. the 80gig is my main hd. is there a way i can make an exact, bootable image of the 80gig onto the 120gig? without raid? :confused: can you reccommend me a free program to do this? or is there another way? so i can remove the 80gig and be able to use the 120gig to boot from?

Who makes your hard drives? Most of the HD makers have free software available on their websites that allow you to clone 1 drive to another.. Also some mobo makers ship similar disk cloning software on their install discs.. RAID is not required to do what you ask, and in fact could make the task of cloning drives more difficult depending on the situation..

raid has nothing to do with what you need to do.
 
Yep, you are wanting to clone your drive. Very different than RAID. Also, RAID 1 is mirroring, not RAID 0. ;)
 
You can also set up mirroring in Disk Management, but there's probably a small performance hit.
 
I recently migrated my PVR from a 200GB to a 320GB. The only way I could get it to boot was when I used 'dd' and then 'parted' to resize the second partition to fill the disk. I tried two versions of Ghost and the demo of TrueImage, none provided a working system.
 
Its not that noobish, only the raid part, but im sure you figured that out by now ;) .

Anyways, I was trying this as well and was unsuccessful. I was trying to move my OS from a PATA 120GB to a 36GB raptor. It just didn't work out as everybody kept saying to try different things and none worked.

If you get it to work, hats off, if not you can do what I did. Just use the other HDD as a vista drive and leave your original for xp. I also added a 250GB 16mb cache drive for storage.

The good thing about that is you never realise how nice a hard drive feels until you do a fresh windows install.

Also, i'm happy that im using the 36GB raptor. Even though its very small it encourages me to keep that drive maintained since it fills up so quickly.

I hope that you get something that works out, if not, fresh windows.
 
i did have an issue using ghost , changing my O/S drive to another drive, when i would boot on the new drive, i was tossed into a loop of loging in, then out, and asked to log in again.

that was using Ghost 7.
