Raid 0 not necessary for video editing?

For a long time I was led to believe that in an ideal video editing workstation, you would use a pair of hard drives in RAID 0. The reason is that RAID 0 supposedly has a much better write performance and makes it ideal for capturing video.

Now I'm reading on these forums that say it's not necessary and that a lone SATA hard drive can do the job just fine.

Is this true? Because if it is, you just saved me the trouble of buying a pair of hard drives.

It used to be more so true for older drives, where you were looking at much slower speeds than these days. Now a good sata drive will perform just as well as some of those older 2 or 4 drive raid 0 arrays.

For video editing 2 raptors in raid 0 with a large strip size will perform faster then 1 raptor. period.

For all of my RAID bashing that I do, I will agree here that RAID is the way to go, with some cautions. Video editing, with sequential reads and writes, stands to gain quite a bit. Read up on RAID, including this thread: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=874828 and understand both the potential and pitfalls of RAID before jumping in.

A single drive setup is capable of working with even high quality video in real time, but RAID-0 can significantly improve both load and save times. The more you invest, the more you get out of it.
