Just want to know if anyone thinks it is worth doing a RAID 0 with a matching pair of 20 gig ATA/100 drives.

if your ok with the fact that its less stable than non raid (one hd goes all your info goes vers 2 drives, one goes the other is ok) it will increase your speed for read and write, so its upto you

I'd say sure, go for it. I keep a 3rd hard drive in my main PC as my data storage. But, I definitely like having RAID.

what he said.

I would most definitely do it. But only do it if you have a third drive to use for your storage. Otherwise noway would I do it. If one of those drives fails you're screwed because you can't get your data back. But if you are just using the RAID for the OS and work space, games, applications, ect.. and then transferring your completed files to the 3rd data drive, then it's all good. If something went wrong with the RAID well big deal, just fix whatever is wrong, reinstall the OS and you're good to go. All your important files will be on the other drive.

I recently had a hard drive on my RAID 0 fail... Thank god my hard drives had Self-Monitoring Analysis Reporting Technology (hard drive feature; warns of problems before total failure). I was able to backup all my data before it completely died. I would reccomend running the SMART monitoring utility.

right now im running raid 0 only, but in amonth im getting a new rig and ill use one of my curent drives as a back up for a new sata raid(ill use the other for surver perposes)

I do have an 80gig that I use for storage already. So I am set there. I actually have 4 matching 20gigs but I think I want to run a raid on my other machine this weekend. Haven't decided. Is it possible to run something with 4 drives for speed? I'm not looking for any redundency, just a little more speed. And would it be any faster with 4 drives. I guess I should read up a little.

Yes you can. But it might be slower than two drives would be. IDE can only access one drive at a time on a IDE cable. So with 2 drives on each cable you would have a situation where two drives are waiting for data to be writen or read from.

If you are planing on using a 4 channel Raid card then this isn't an issue.

On the same note. Those are older modle drives. Your access times are going to be around 14 MLS with transfer speeds of 35 MPS. One older Atlas 2 SCSI drive will be faster. Access time would be around 8 MLS with transfer speeds of around 40 MPS or so.

I used 2 WD 20 gig drives in Raid 0 one time. I went to SCSI not to long after.

I wont go SCSI for one reason. I have 4 matching ATA/100 drives which I got for nothing. But I think I am going to stick doing a RAID 0 on two machines. Just doing it for the heck of it. Hmmm, maybe I will just try a RAID 0+1! Its gonna be hard to decide. Anyone running 0+1 out there? Sounds like a winner the way this sited explains it.

I wasn't suggesting you go to SCSI. I was just using it as a comparsion to give you an idea of the speed of the older drives you are wanting to use.
