RAID 0 Backup Software Suggestions

First post here so hello to all. Anyways, my newly built PC (my first effort BTW) has RAID 0 installed utilizing 2 WD 80GB Caviar drives on the NVRaid controller (A8N SLI Del.). Everything is working fine and I am very happy w/ performance. My only issue is I'd like to Ghost the whole "drive" to a backup HDD but am not sure what software to get. I have Norton Ghost (which gets lousy reviews on this forum) and it does not recognize RAID 0. Does anyone have a suggestion on good RAID 0 software that isn't outrageously expensive? I can use USB/1394 or SATA. Also, how in the hell do you uninstall Ghost. It doesn't seem to want to leave (part of NSW premium install) TIA

Have you tried Acronis True Image? They have a trial download that you can use to your heart's content. (It fully works except that it won't restore a bootable image.)

Actually, Ghost will work with RAID most of the time. It is not supported by Symantec though.

Ghost and hardware-level RAID systems
Although it is not a supported feature, Ghost can sometimes create and restore images to hardware level RAID systems if you load the appropriate DOS ASPI driver to support this. Load the DOS ASPI driver when you create the image file and again when you restore the image file. DOS ASPI drivers can usually be obtained from the RAID hardware manufacturer. For other ASPI driver information, see the document Information on ASPI drivers.

Notes on getting Ghost to work with hardware RAID systems
Use similar hardware: Restore the image file only to a computer that uses the same hardware as the source computer. Because the operating system needs the drivers for the array, the drives will be inaccessible on the destination computer unless the hardware is the same.
SCSI or IDE: Ghost's ability to work with RAID arrays is not dependent on whether the array uses SCSI drives or IDE drives.
Mirrored sets in Windows NT: To clone mirrored sets in Windows NT, break the mirror, run Ghost with the -NTIID switch ( -ntiid ), and then recreate the mirror using the Windows NT Disk Administrator. Note that duplexed disks are a type of mirrored set.
Mirrored sets in Windows 2000/XP: Symantec Ghost 7.5, 8.x, and Norton Ghost 2003 support cloning a mirrored partition in Window 2000 and Windows XP provided that the source partition is on a Dynamic Disk and the image is restored to a Basic Disk. The restored partition is not mirrored. See the document Ghost compatibility with Dynamic partitions.
Restore the partition rather than the disk: In some situations, Ghost may be able to restore a partition from a disk image when Ghost cannot restore the disk image.

and noted. Fast and thorough tech support is a HUGE factor in
my buying decisions since my systems are usually on the
cutting edge. I'll give it a shot next week, after I put my
backup drive together (WD 160GB SATA/USB/1394 capable), and
let you know the results for future tech reference.

When I put my back up drive together next week I;ll try it and report results but it seems, right now, that NVraid is not supported at this time.
 
Ghost 9 works fine with RAID, it has an option to load drivers using the F6 option when booting of the recovery cd.
 
Thomas and Kleox, I believe that both of your posts/references refer to SCSI and/or IDE RAID arrays but not SATA. Ghost 9 doesn't seem to recognize that I have 160GBs of RAID 0 on 2x80GB SATA drives (I think it sees something like 46.7 GB, not home right now but that is what I remember). RAID in general isn't the issue but SATA RAID is a problem. I wish it worked because Ghost 9 embedded itself dep in the syatem before I realized it wasn't useful on my current rig (can use it on my fiance's though, single IDE). Norton should resolve this quickly as SATA RAID is not that uncommon any longer.

I got nearly the same configuration as you and also have the same problem.

Please let us know when you find out how (and with what program) to do a working standalone backup of an image with SATA Raid 0.

you could be right, iam using livestate server 3 and iam backing up to/from SI3114 controller and an Intel ICH5R in RAID1 and 0 without any problems. However the driver database is huge with LS Server 3.
 
Terabyte seem to be making imaging software that can deal with RAID0 on SATA drives, including the NF3/4 chipsets, it's cheap too.

Have a look at Image for windows and image for DOS. You can even save an image to the same partition!
