Radio setup confusion for Kitchen

Hey all,

I'm looking to replace my cr@ppy portable AM/FM radio. Quick search on Amazon, and all the radios they offer look like poor options. I used to have a Teac Clock/Alarm HD Radio with ipod support that was decent but died after four years. Luckily I never needed it as an alarm clock because the time was always off on it.

This Onkyo CS-445 CD Receiver System looks nice but I'm not sure if I could stream Internet Radio via Ipod Touch?

Also I was thinking of buying a refurb laptop and buy some decent speakers to play Internet Radio.

So, has anyone did this? What speakers would you recommend that do take up a lot of space? I'm primarily listening to NPR (National Public Radio) and classical music. I'm looking for value and under $300 would be my budget.

Just a follow up -

I was at my local Target buying some things and happened to see a Sonos display with the Play3 and Play5. They had a special, buy either the Play3 or Play5 and get the Sonos bridge for FREE. Well after listening for while I was a bit underwhelmed. Granted the display played a small sample of music so I could not get to sample songs I like with it. But for my use Sonos was too expensive for a kitchen radio replacement setup.

So I went with https://www.ihomeaudio.com/iD3BZC/ iHome iD3 speaker system which was on sale for under $90 on Amazon.com. For me this device is working out great. Since I listen to a lot for news (NPR, BBC) and less music in the kitchen this is perfect for me. However, I was impressed how well music sounded and the bass is impressive for a little speaker unit.

Is it better than Sono? NO because Sono does more for wireless streaming.

Does iD3 sound better than Play3? From the Sono's display I would say the iD3 is better, but hard to tell between the Play5 and iD3.

Will it blend? God I hope not, I just got it.
 
For folks that don't need the multi-room flexibility then yeah I don't think Sonos would work, but as for quality I don't think the iD3 compares (of course I am a bit biased working here) but I've had a chance to test Sonos vs. a lot of the competition.
 
Although you already bought it - the unit you bought is not one I'd reccommend to anyone else - especally now. The 30 pin connector is going away as the new iDevices will be using the Lightning connector. You can use adapters, but that eliminates some of the slickness/ease of use from an integrated dock. At that point - might as well just use an aux cable.

Personally - I would have installed in-ceiling speakers coupled with a DIY T-Amp from somewhere like 41hz.
